More than 100 correctional officer openings need to be filled
THOMSON – Those interested in applying for one of more than 100 correctional officer openings and other positions at Thomson federal prison are invited to attend a job fair and application workshop on one of 2 days next month.
Job-seekers, who first must apply online at www.usajobs.gov, will be able to meet with professionals and get help with the application process at any time between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. June 13 or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 15 at the AUSP Thomson Training Center at 1100 One Mile Road.
The prison has more than 100 correctional officer vacancies, as well as medical positions and a variety of other spots to fill, the federal Bureau of Prisons said in a news release Thursday.
Correctional officers who enter service by Sept. 30 and successfully complete a year will get a bonus of 10% of their starting salary of $41,868, a little more than $4,100.
Military veterans, for whom the hiring requirements are less stringent, also are encouraged to apply.
For example, correctional officer hopefuls must apply before their 37th birthday; that age restriction does not apply to veterans.
In October, the prison held a job fair at Sauk Valley Community College and at the time, officials said they planned to fill up to 300 slots, with 300 more to be filled by the end of this year. This round of hiring is part of that effort.
