Amazon Launches Program to participate in SNAP food assistance program

Amazon has launched a new program in Illinois to increase options for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) customers to purchase groceries online and improve food access in communities. Amazon was one of many retailers selected by the USDA to participate in the Agency’s SNAP Online Purchasing Pilot.

Amazon is providing SNAP customers not only with the option to use SNAP EBT to purchase groceries from Amazon’s broad grocery selection, but also access to Amazon Fresh and free shipping options in Amazon Pantry, all without any membership fees.  Free shipping options are available across the Core Grocery selection as well as the Fresh and Pantry programs.

USDA, Amazon, and other retailers successfully launched the initial pilot in New York in April 2019 and since then have added 33 states and Washington, DC. SNAP customers have expressed appreciation for the additional option and convenience of purchasing groceries online, and interest and awareness in the program continue to grow.
