Infrastructure Update: Construction on Illinois 2 in Sterling begins Aug. 23

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that weather permitting, construction on East Fourth Street (Illinois 2 westbound) from Fourth Avenue to Second Avenue in Sterling will begin Monday, August 23, 2021. East Fourth Street will remain open to one-way traffic with periodic side street closures.

Work involves reconstruction of pavement, ADA improvements and traffic signal modernization. Fischer Excavating Inc. of Freeport is the contractor of the $1,787,877 project, which is scheduled to be completed by November 24, 2021.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
