Juneteenth is the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. This day honors the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas following the end of the Civil War. June 19, 1865 was nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom.
Today is a celebration of the promise of freedom for all.
