The Illinois Department of Transportation recently announced that weather permitting, construction on the intersection of U.S. 20 and Barge Terminal Road in East Dubuque will begin Monday, March 31. The work will encompass a 1.5-mile zone from Frentress Lake Road to just east of Barge Terminal Road.
The project will improve the safety of the intersection, which connects to a 100-acre logistics park. House Minority Leader Tony McCombie is urging area residents to take caution when driving in the work zone: the project will require acceleration and deceleration lanes on both directions of U.S. 20. In addition, on westbound U.S. 20, an island will be installed to allow traffic to focus on oncoming traffic in one direction instead of all four lanes of traffic when entering or exiting Barge Terminal Road.
Area residents should also be aware that the left turn lane for eastbound U.S. 20 at Barge Terminal Road will be eliminated and access to the westbound U.S. 20 Frontage Road and Kramer Road will be restricted to traffic on westbound U.S. 20. A left turn lane will be added to eastbound U.S. 20 at Frentress Lake Road to provide access to the frontage road.
The project is expected to be completed in November.
Leader McCombie is putting the notice out to residents to expect delays, utilize alternate routes when possible, allow for extra time when traveling, and be prepared to slow and stop while moving through the work zone.
