Strengthening Illinois Through the Trades: McCombie Speaks to the Associated General Contractors

Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie recently spoke to the Associated General Contractors at their annual meeting in Springfield.

McCombie was invited to speak to the group to give a legislative update and talk about the impact this year’s legislative session has on AGC’s industry.

The Leader spoke to the importance of AGC’s advocacy, and the need for their continued dialogue on issues that come up in the legislature. She also noted that as the trade industry continues to grow, AGC’s role will continue to expand.

“Every road we drive, every bridge we cross, every project you build keeps our state’s economy moving,” said McCombie. “The trades are fundamental to Illinois’ growth, safety, and competitiveness. Without the skilled men and women who construct and maintain our infrastructure, the state simply does not function.”

While the transit reform bill pushed through during legislative veto session severely impacted AGC and the trade industry, McCombie stressed the need for better policies to be handed down that will encourage growth, not stifle essential industry in the state.

“As a legislator — and as the Republican Leader — my priority is straightforward:
support policies that grow Illinois and strengthen the construction industry,” said McCombie.

The Leader spent time this year visiting community colleges that serve her 89th Legislative District where trade programs are experiencing rapid growth.

“Demand for these programs is outrunning capacity,” she said. “That’s a good problem to have, but it’s also a reminder: we need to invest in preparing and making sure the next generation has the opportunity and training to fill the trades workforce pipeline.”

McCombie looks forward to continuing the conversation on essential issues that will support the trades and AGC, especially as the legislature reconvenes next year.
