The first investigating committee hearing following the indictment of Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Urbana) has been set for next month.
Illinois House Republicans called for a special investigating committee to examine misconduct of Rep. Ammons following news of a 10-count federal indictment for wire fraud, including a scheme from about 2017 to June 15, 2025, to defraud the State of Illinois, taxpayers and campaign donors.
In response, House Republicans initiated paperwork on July 10th for a Special Investigating Committee, to determine if Rep. Ammons’ actions could lead to her expulsion from the General Assembly.
Since House Minority Leader Tony McCombie first called for a Special Investigating Committee weeks ago, she has continued to speak out about the need for greater accountability and transparency – which includes stronger ethics laws.
In an interview, the leader stated: “we may not be able to legislate bad behavior, but we can absolutely demand transparency, accountability and meaningful penalty enhancements or consequences for those who betray the public’s trust.”
The investigating committee is comprised of 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans. The first hearing will be August 6 at noon and will be available for the public. This will be the first time since 2020 since a Special Investigating Committee was formed in the Illinois House.
