Legislation sponsored and passed by Rep. Tony McCombie to assist with disaster recovery was signed into law late last week.
“When a family goes through a natural disaster, it is often one of the worst moments of their lives,” said McCombie. “We need to ensure we do everything within our power to help those tragically effected by natural disasters get back on their feet as quickly as possible. Firsthand experience in my legislative district from flooding in 2019 showed me the necessity of legislation like this,” McCombie continued.
House Bill 1932 allows county boards, city councils, and township boards to waive building permit costs or inspection costs and fees, following a disaster, when residents are repairing or rebuilding their damaged homes. This could apply to residential construction, commercial construction, or manufactured homes. Fee waivers are permissive under the bill. The bill does not exempt these rebuilds or repairs from inspection, it only permits these local governments to waive the costs of inspections and the permit process.
“I appreciate the opportunity to address these concerns of homeowners in my district and will continue to work toward cutting red tape on rebuilding efforts following natural disasters,” said McCombie. “How we build back following a disaster defines us. We need to give more hope to those who choose to rebuild here in Illinois.”
The bipartisan legislation passed the Illinois House unanimously and was signed into law on June 24, 2021 by Governor JB Pritzker.
