This National Police Week we recognize the bravery of our law enforcement officers and honor them for their dedication to their communities.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Each year tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Last week in Springfield, lawmakers held a special service to honor Illinois’ officers and those who have given their lives in the line of duty.
“Our police work hard to serve and protect us, our families, and our communities,” said Leader McCombie. “I want to thank each one of our police officers across Illinois for working every day to keep us safe. Those officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty will never be forgotten.”
Police Week runs from May 14-20. While the appreciation for everything law enforcement does extends much beyond that, this week is a recognition and one that offers honor, remembrance, and peer support, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
